In this edition of NorthWest Indian News, Lummi Tribal member Chenoa Egawa hosts the program during National Aboriginal Day in Vancouver, British Columbia. NWIN reports from the Vancouver Art Gallery where the Art and Culture Celebration taking place in downtown Vancouver. In all, there are five days of events honoring the enormous contributions of First Nations, Metis’ and Inuit peoples to Canadian society.


Makah Whaling” Niki Cleary, reporter.

In Anchorage Alaska, during the 59th annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, the Makah Nation receives the renewal of a quota for the harvest of up to 20 gray whales over the next five years for subsistence purposes. However, a statute in the 1972 U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act , has suspended Makah Whaling until an environmental impact statement and public testimony is completed and ruled upon.
